THE STOMP!
Sunnyland Summer Backyard Art Stomp
On Saturday, July 17th, 2010 the “Art Walk” comes home when the Sunnyland neighborhood transforms itself into backyard “galleries” displaying a plethora of artistic creativity. The outdoor gallery concept has roots in Sweden, where artists frequently hold outdoor art openings/dinner gatherings during the summer months. Several Sunnyland neighbors came up with the idea of opening their own backyard galleries to each other and the community at large as a way of sharing their talents and to get to know each other better.
Who can participate?
Anyone who lives in Sunnyland can become an art curator by creating a backyard gallery featuring their own art and/or that of their friends, family, or neighbors (who may or may not live in Sunnyland themselves). Any form of art is encouraged and the only limit is one’s imagination. 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, sculpture, ceramics, music, performance, children’s art, metal work, recycled object art, garden art, lights and lanterns – you name it.
How do you participate?
It’s now too late to be added to the map (as I am aiming to get it to printer on June 28), HOWEVER if you want to host a gallery that night there is absolutely nothing stopping you. Ask some friends over, hang some art, and make a sign to post in your yard that says “STOMP STOP” like the other galleries and see who stops by!
What else are you responsible for?
Other than creating a fabulous outdoor gallery you should also take into consideration ways to draw attention to your space. Signage that can be posted in your yard, on fences, or a sandwich board sign near the sidewalk is suggested. Offering snacks within your own gallery is optional and can be as easy or as complicated as you wish. Please note to take the same precautions with serving any alcoholic beverages that you typically would for any gathering at your home.
What if you have a fabulous yard, but are not an artist?
Invite whoever you like to be a part of your gallery. Are you an artist without a gallery? Talk to your Sunnyland neighbors and see if there is someone else in the neighborhood that you can join with as part of their gallery. This is an organic endeavor with very few rules.
The event will take place on Saturday, July 17th from 4:00pm – 10:00pm. If you choose to keep your gallery open after these hours please be considerate of your neighbors and take whatever measures you need to in order to keep your relationship friendly!

Hey Alice, WOW! Love the site. Congrats!
Alice, Nice site. I want to see this this year. Looks like a lot of fun.
Hello,
I heard Will and the band play at the Boundary Bay beer garden a week or so ago and they were great. I talked to Will and he said they would be playing at the “stomp” on Ellis St.
I live in the 2400 block of Ellis and would like to come and check out the band. Do you know what time they will be playing?
Thanks,
Tom
I think he’ll start around 4pm.
Looks like fun! I wrote a blog post about it, it’ll post Saturday morning. Such a cool idea.

Cool! I will check it out!
I think that this is an awesome idea. However if I could make a suggestion. Your flyers are VERY vague about any details of what sunnyland stomp is, and where to go, it doesnt even say where you can get maps at. Ive been seeing the flyers around town, but I just now(the day of) saw a craigslist ad that led me to here to get a map. Some people also might not even know where sunnyland is, infact I’ve overheard a few people not know where it’s at at terra organica. But other than that it seems pretty cool. It’s really rad to see people being creative
Hi – Sorry about any confusion. Anything I have produced has our website on it which is the place to find the map. My only excuse other than that is that I also work full time and have put this together when I can find a spare moment so thank you for your understanding and hope to see you tonight!
